Shawna Vercher, President of political action media network Democracy Legacy, was one of the few live radio hosts to cover the tragic shooting of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords for a national audience on Saturday, January 8, 2011.
In the hours following the event, on a day most broadcasters were off, Shawna relayed to listeners reports from Tucson, Washington DC and elsewhere as she became the “go-to” source for up-to-the-minute accounts of the aftermath of the shooting.
Representative Giffords and eighteen others were shot during a constituent meeting held in a Safeway parking lot near Tucson, Arizona.
“We were able to bring beautiful moments of support and community in the aftermath of a tragedy that rocked so many of us. People needed to come together to begin healing. It was important that people felt heard and inspired to support our community,” Vercher said.
